  EAI Asia Security Initiative Working Paper No. 4
The latest working paper by Byung-Yeon Kim is available now on the East Asia Institute (EAI) website. This working paper entitled "Markets, Bribery, and Regime Stability in North Korea" looks at the nature and extent of bribery in the DPRK. Using data from North Korean refugees, this paper presents a number of policy implications regarding the stability of the regime.

  EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
MacArthur Foundation Asia Security Initiative 2010 Annual Meeting
The EAI will be hosting the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative 2010 Annual Meeting at Westin Chosun Hotel, Seoul, South Korea, from July 7-9 2010. This will be the second annual meeting held since the Inaugural MacArthur Grantees' Meeting and Official Launch of the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative hosted by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore last year.

EAI Asia Security Initiative Working Paper No. 5
As part of research collaboration within the ASI network, the EAI is hosting a working paper from the Peterson Institute for International Economics, one of its partner institutions. Examining the issues of state repression against the informal market economy in North Korea, Marcus Noland and Stephan Haggard consider how the penal system has changed to cope with the rise of informal markets. Their working paper entitled "Economic Crime and Punishment in North Korea" is available on the EAI website.

EAI International Workshop "Historical Reconciliation and Inherited Responsibility"
The EAI's recently-established Center for Values and Ethics held an international conference on March 11, 2010 at Korea University. Under the title of "Historical Reconciliation and Inherited Responsibility," this conference brought together experts to discuss the major issues of reconciliation and responsibility in East Asia.

2010 EAI Global Academy
The EAI will hold its fifth annual EAI Global Academy with support from Henry Luce Foundation of the United States and Chiang Kai-Shek Foundation of Taiwan. This year, the 2010 EAI Global Academy will feature the following EAI Fellows: Barbara Booth Stallings, Etel Liliana Solingen, Susan Hayes Whiting, and Mary Alice Haddad.

2010 EPIK Young Leaders Conference
The EAI invites undergraduate and graduate students to participate in an essay competition in the 2010 EPIK Young Leaders Conference, which will be held on August 17, 2010. This is an annual academic conference organized by EPIK Spiders, an academic circle created by EAI intern graduates. The essay topic for this year is "Building a Community."

EAI Social Sciences Lecture Series
The final session of the EAI Social Sciences Lecture series was held on March 29, 2010. The month-long series conducted by Professor Young-Sun Ha (Seoul National University) covered a range of topics related to youths in history within the context of international politics. The transcripts from the series and multimedia are available in Korean on the EAI website. [View Multimedia]
