"New Strategic Thinking: Planning for Korean Foreign Policy"
Co-organized by MOFA and EAI
Globalization, digitalization, and democratization have introduced a set of new problems to the diplomatic environment of the 21st century. Reflecting on these mid-to-long term diplomatic tasks and challenges, Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MOFA) and the East Asia Institute (EAI) held an international conference on April 29 at Lotte Hotel. Policy experts from the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Turkey gathered to discuss foreign policy strategies for the new administration that is compatible with the increasingly complex diplomatic environment.

Roudtable Discussion for Middle Power Diplomacy
EAI holds a series of five [Roundtable Discussions for Middle Power Diplomacy] throughout the year 2013 inviting ambassadors to Korea as presenters and prominent discussants among members of the National Assembly, government officials, scholars, and journalists to share meaningful insights on prospects of South Korea's middle power diplomacy in the midst of U.S.-China relations. On April 3, 2013, EAI invited Canadian Ambassador David Chatterson to discuss Canada's middle power diplomatic strategy and policy recommendations for South Korea's middle power diplomacy.
Conference on "FTA 2.0: A New Trade Strategy for South Korea"
On April 25, 2013, the EAI's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) 2.0 Research Panel held a conference to present its policy recommendations from the research and discussed further proposals with the current government officials and policy experts on trade. FTA 2.0 Research Panel was brought together in November 2012 to evaluate the past ten years of South Korea's FTA policies and devise more practical future FTA strategies for South Korea that would better promote its economic interests.
VII Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies
From April 27 to 29, 2013, EAI President Sook-Jong Lee participated in the VII Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. At this conference, multilateral measures to build the infrastructure such as the Asia Democracy Network to stimulate greater cooperation for democratic governance in Asia were discussed. Among the four participant institutions from Korea, EAI participated as the representative institution of Korean think tanks.
Korea-Japan Future Dialogue
On May 11, 2013, Genron NPO and the EAI will co-host Korea-Japan Future Dialogue to be held in Nippon Press Center Hall, Japan. Agendas include Korea-Japan relations perceived by public opinion, sources of conflict and cooperation in Korea-Japan relations, and prospects of Korea-Japan cooperation in transforming East Asia.
U.S.-ROK Cooperation for Global Nuclear Governance Research Team's Washington Conference
From May 16 to 17, 2013, EAI's U.S.-ROK Cooperation for Global Nuclear Governance Research Team is to hold a conference in Washington, DC with three major U.S. research institutes. On May 16, EAI will hold roundtable meetings with the Global America Business Institute and Korea Economic Institute, and on May 17, EAI and the U.S. Center for Security and International Studies will co-host a conference on such topics as the U.S.-Korea Nuclear Cooperation Agreement and North Korea's nuclear threats.
North Korea Policy Conference 2013
U.S. Embassy in Seoul, EAI, and Global Leader Department of Sungkyunkwan University will co-host North Korea Policy Conference on May 21, 2013. At this conference, North Korean human rights issues and the U.S.-Korea future policy coordination measures toward North Korea will be discussed to enhance the public understanding of the complex nature behind policymaking process toward North Korea.
Apply for the EAI Fellows Program 2013-2014
Applications for the EAI Fellows Program 2013-14 are now open. This program offers selected fellows the opportunity to present seminars and lectures, based on an unpublished article on current regional issues, at two or more partner institutions in East Asia. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2013. Please see the EAI website for more details.
