  Responding to North Korea's Nuclear Test:
     Complex Approach of Military, Economy, and Politics
With tensions growing on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea's third nuclear test, this timely EAI commentary examines the policy options facing the Park Geun-hye administration. In understanding what the Kim Jong-un regime's motives are for conducting its nuclear test, this commentary emphasizes a complex approach utilizing military, economic, and political countermeasures will induce North Korea away from its current path of conflict and confrontation.

On March 18, 2012, the EAI invited for its Smart Talk Forum Scott Snyder who is Senior Fellow for Korea Studies at the Council of Foreign Relations, and Director of the Center for U.S.-Korea Policy at the Asia Foundation. The title for the talk was "60 Years of Partnership and Shared Prosperity: U.S. Foreign Policy on Northeast Asia" with a specific focus on the Obama administration's "rebalancing" to the region. The U.S.-China Relations Statement Factsheet for November 2012 is now available. This issue includes statements on maritime disputes in East Asia, cyber security, and reaction to President Obama's election victory.
Apply for the EAI Fellows Program 2013-2014
Applications for the EAI Fellows Program 2013-14 are now open. This program offers selected fellows the opportunity to present seminars and lectures, based on an unpublished article on current regional issues, at two or more partner institutions in East Asia. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2013. Please see the EAI website for more details.

The latest edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies has been released. This new edition includes articles on developmental states in East Asia, elections in nondemocratic regimes, village elections in rural China, new parties in Japanese local elections, and antimilitarism in Japan.
