Following the election of Vladimir Putin as president of Russia in March 2012, this commentary examines the impact his return will have on Russia's domestic politics and its foreign policy, particularly toward the Northeast Asia region. The author believes that despite the strong political rhetoric by Putin during the election, Russia's foreign policy will unlikely change much from before. Domestically though, Putin will have to address political reform following the emergence of new political elites who are now in stronger position and seek political change.
