  EAI Participates in the Council of Councils Meeting
On March 12-13, 2012 the EAI participated in the inaugural meeting of the Council of Councils meeting, an international initiative arranged by the Council on Foreign Relations to connect leading foreign policy institutes from around the world. This event took place in Washington D.C. with 19 founding members from different countries around the world. As a representative think tank from South Korea, the EAI shared policy ideas with other institutions on the major foreign policy challenges of today such as global governance, nuclear proliferation, and the dollar as the future reserve currency.

  EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit and Global Governance Conference
In the run-up to Seoul Nuclear Security Summit, the EAI launched its Nuclear Security Study Team to analyze the main issues confronting the summit and tasks for the South Korean government. On February 13, 2012 the Nuclear Security Study Team presented their research findings at the conference and discussed them with government officials, scholars, and the media. A summary of the special report released by the Nuclear Security study team is available on the EAI website.

EAI Issue Briefing on Chinese Interest on the Korean Peninsula and
the Future of North Korea

In this issue briefing, Andrei Lankov provides his thoughts on China's role on the Korean Peninsula. He believes that while Beijing holds many concerns regarding the future of the Korean Peninsula, these can be overcome by effective diplomacy on the part of South Korea.

Global Net 21 Meeting
On February 14, 2012, the EAI hosted the Global Net 21 meeting with Hyun-Chong Kim, Former Minister for Trade giving a presentation. His topic for this event was "KORUS FTA: Development through Competition."

EAI Conference on Aid Effectiveness
In 2011, the EAI launched its Official Development Aid (ODA) research panel to explore aid development issues and South Korea's mediating role between donor countries and aid recipients. The research panel members will present their research findings at this conference to be held on March 23, 2012.

US Strategic Defense Guidance and South Korea's National Defense
In January 2012, the Obama administration announced new strategic defense guidelines outlining a new focus on the Asia-Pacific region and cutbacks on the number of ground forces. The implications these guidelines will have for the defense of South Korea is covered in this issue briefing by Young Ho Kim, who also discussed his thoughts in a Smart Q&A episode.

Smart Q&A with Jae Nam Ko on the Return of Putin
The recent election of Vladimir Putin as the next president of Russia comes at a time when Moscow is looking to become more involved in East Asia. The EAI talked with Jae Nam Ko from the Korea National Diplomacy Academy on the kind of impact Putin will have on Russia's foreign policy and how South Korea should respond.

EAI 10th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series
2012 marks the tenth anniversary of the EAI. On this special occasion, the EAI will be holding a series of lectures with distinguished guest speakers. The first lecture in this series will be held on April 5 and will be delivered by Dr. Chi-Ha Kim, Korean poet and playwright, on "Words of Wisdom for 2012".
EPIK Young Leaders Conference
The EPIK Young Leaders Conference, an academic forum organized by the EAI for sharing a global mindset among young people, will be held on August 14, 2012. The EPIK Young Leaders Conference 2012 calls for student papers to be submitted by March 28, 2012 on the topic of "Drawing New Lines: Values, Institutions, and Governance." New Edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies
The latest edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies has been released. This new edition includes five articles on trade agreements in Asia, Chinese netizens' perceptions on the two Koreas, health policy in Thailand, energy in Japan, and presidential voting in Taiwan.
Apply for the EAI Fellows Program 2012-2013
Applications for the EAI Fellows Program 2012-13 are now open. This program offers selected fellows the opportunity to present seminars and lectures, based on an unpublished article on current regional issues at two or more partner institutions in East Asia. The deadline for applications is July 16, 2012. Please see the website for more details.
