     International Affairs Think Tanks
The EAI ranked #24 out of the World Top Fifty Security and International Affairs Think Tanks in the 2011 Global Go-To Think Tank Index Rankings compiled by The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the International Relations Program, University of Pennsylvania. In other categories, the EAI was #26 in Think Tanks with Outstanding Policy-Oriented Public Policy Research Programs and #22 out of the Top Thirty Think Tanks in Asia.

  EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
EAI Commentary on Kim Jong-un and the Future of North Korea
Following the death of his father, Kim Jong-un now faces the challenge of establishing his own power base. This EAI Security Net commentary highlights the unique role that South Korea can play in proposing a strategy of coevolution to guide North Korea along a staged approach toward becoming a "normal" country. In this regard, South Korea must also lead the international community to coevolve along with North Korea in reshaping the Korean Peninsula and the wider region.

EAI Issue Briefing on Russia's "Return" to Asia
In recent years there has been much talk of the United States "returning" to Asia, but Russia is also making its own return. In this Issue Briefing, Beom-Shik Shin believes that it is time to think outside of the narrow dichotomy of U.S.-China relations by considering the enhanced role of Russia in Northeast Asia and how to induce North Korea in this structural change in the region.

EAI Issue Briefing on South Korea's Policy to North Korea
In this Issue Briefing, Jihwan Hwang's believes that if South Korea wants to keep its initiative on the Korean Peninsula in spite of the changing balance of power in East Asia, it needs to balance against China's influence over North Korea. In order to balance against China's influence, South Korea should seek to enlarge its influence over North Korea by encouraging the North to depend more and more on the South Korean side.

Smart Talk with Grzegorz Ekiert
On January 9, 2012, the EAI invited Professor Grzegorz Ekiert of Harvard University to talk about democratization in Eastern Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Under the title of "Two Decades of Transformations in Central and Eastern Europe," Professor Ekiert discussed on whether the communist legacy had an influence on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Smart Talk with Israel Scholars
The EAI invited three scholars from Bar-Ilan University in Israel to talk about regional developments in the Middle East and Israel's national security. Following their presentations, there was a discussion with South Korean scholars and experts on the Middle East on issues such as the Arab uprising and the threat of Iran's missile program.

U.S.-China Relations Series Statement Factsheet
The EAI's U.S.-China Relations Series, an ongoing project to track the official statements from both sides, has updated the statement factsheet for September 2011. The main issues covered in this factsheet are on arms sales to Taiwan, human rights, and issues related to the Middle East.

EAI Book Publications
The EAI has released two book publications in Korean, U.S.-China Relations 2025 and Theory of International Relations in East Asia. Focused on how bilateral relations between the United States and China will shape over the next ten years, U.S-China Relations 2025 is an edited volume bringing together South Korean experts who cover divergent issues from trade issues to the role of soft power. Theory of International Relations in East Asia by Chaesung Chun explores different international relations theories that can apply to the context of East Asia.
EPIK Young Leaders Conference
The EPIK Young Leaders Conference, an academic forum organized by the EAI for sharing a global mindset among young people, will be held on August 14, 2012. The EPIK Young Leaders Conference 2012 calls for student papers to be submitted by March 28, 2012 on the topic of "Drawing New Lines: Values, Institutions, and Governance." New Edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies
This new edition includes four articles on democratization and economic development in Indonesia, China's industrial policies, policymaking in Taiwan, and interest rate liberalization in China. There is also a review essay on access to justice in post-Mao China which examines both criminal and administrative law.
