 EAI Issue Briefing
Since the global financial crisis, China's status in the world economic order in terms of economic volume and influence improved so fast that China now is faced with the challenges of accommodating the changes in its domestic sociopolitical sphere as well as its external strategies. For China to be a true peacekeeper and engineer of progress in Northeast Asia, its effort to resolve the nuclear problem, to promote North Korea's economic reform, and to improve human rights for its people should not be separated from the North Korean-Chinese relationship, at the same time, China should deal with these issues based on transparent economic logic and market principle.

Despite enhanced cooperation in regional institutions, Northeast Asian countries have been unable to exercise similar cohesion in the G20. In this Issue Briefing, Yves Tiberghien examines this Northeast Asian paradox in the context of the post-Seoul Summit environment. Tiberghien believes the next few years will be crucial for the success of the G20 and he offers a number of policy recommendations for the concerned countries.

EAI Working Paper on North Korea
North Korea's diplomacy is focused on preserving its nuclear weapons in order to secure its military-first politics system. In this working paper, part of the Future of North Korea series, Chaesung Chun explains that Pyongyang's military-first diplomacy is actually damaging its own regime security. North Korea must therefore change both its diplomacy and its political system as well as evolve with other countries in order to embrace the twenty-first century.
