EAI Working Paper on Foreign Direct Investments and Economic Sanctions
Dong-Hun Kim's working paper "Coercive Assets? Foreign Direct Investments and the Use of Economic Sanctions," examines the impact of economic interdependence upon statecraft. Specifically, Kim argues that while foreign direct investment (FDI) matters, the effect depends on the entry mode of FDI. The economic interdependence created by FDI does not have a monotonic effect on economic statecraft because the relative costs incurred by economic disruption differ depending on the forms of foreign investment.
EAI Working Paper on Human Rights in North Korea
As part of the Future of North Korea working paper series, Soo-Am Kim explains how Pyongyang must address the human rights agenda if it is to guarantee the long-term survival of the regime.
Prospects for Democratization in China
Following the dramatic developments of the "Arab Spring," Youngjin Kim outlines four scenarios on the prospects for democratization in China. While the possibility for democratization is conceivable, Kim believes that it remains a distant possibility. As long as the Chinese government provides economic growth and social stability, the calls for democracy will be muted.
Domestic Stakeholders and U.S.-ROK Alliance
Three working papers have been released looking at the role of domestic stakeholders in the U.S.-ROK alliance. Based on papers submitted to the EAI-Asia Foundation workshop held in 2010, they explore the influence of civil society, the media, and business on the alliance.

Looking at the Six-Party Talks in Northeast Asia, EAI Fellow Andrew Yeo's working paper explores the development of multilateralism in the region. "Bilateralism, Multilateralism, and Institutional Change in Northeast Asia's Regional Security Architecture" shows how multilateralism can overcome the inherent rivalries and function in Northeast Asia, but only in a loose sense. |
