The East Asia Institute (EAI) was proudly selected by the MacArthur Foundation as one of three Asia Security Initiative (ASI) core institutions. As a core institution under the title of Northeast Asian Security Challenge, the EAI will coordinate and lead research activities and projects in the Northeast Asian Security Challenge cluster. This cluster will examine how globalization, democratization, and IT revolution have shaped security relations in Northeast Asia region.

Inaugural MacArthur Grantees' Meeting, Singapore
The MacArthur Foundation and 27 Grantees held the Inaugural MacArthur Grantees' Meeting and the Official Launch of the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative (ASI) from 28th to 29th May 2009 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Singapore. The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University is organized this Inaugural Meeting.

EAI Korean Public Opinion Review: 'Rising North Korean Threat Perception and Support for Korea-U.S. Alliance'
Since 2002, the EAI's Center for Public Opinion Research has been analyzing and assessing the Korean public's opinion on various security issues such as the Korea-U.S. alliance and the North Korean nuclear crisis. In February 2009, within the context of the recent inauguration of the Obama administration as well as the current crisis over North Korea's potential missile launch, the Center set out to understand and interpret the Korean public's opinion on these key issues of the Korea-U.S. alliance and the U.S. leadership in the world.
Launch of the 2009 EAI Global Academy and EAI Fellows Program
In May the EAI launched its Global Academy for 2009
The 1st Smart Talk seminar with Professor Barbara Stallings took place on May 7th entitled "Finance for Development: Latin America, East Asia and Eastern Europe." With seven experts in attendance, they discussed issues on finaancial markets in East Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Why East Asia has the strongest markets and its implication for the future.
The EAI held the 8th New Pyongtaek Forum on 15th of May. For the first half of 2009, the main topic has been "Education Development of a Global City" with the EAI focusing on educational issues. Professor Sung-ki Kim (Hyupsung Graduate School of Education) conducted a presentation on "Internalization of Education in the Global Age."
The 5th InfraVision Forum with Ambassador Hyun Cho took place on May 21st. For this talk, Mr Cho who is Korea's Ambassador for Energy and Resources spoke on the topic of "Prospects and Reality of Regionalization in Northeast Asia."
