EAI is proud to announce the first working paper in its Middle Power Diplomacy Initiative (MPDI). In this paper, See Seng Tan explores ASEAN's historical and contemporary role in guiding the U.S. and China toward peaceful strategic competition, if not outright cooperation.

MPDI Issue Briefing on ASEAN's Middle Power Diplomacy toward China
In this second issue briefing in the MPDI, Yongwook Ryu argues that ASEAN has adopted a dual strategy in regard to China, simultaneously enmeshing China into the region through economic interdependence and institutional frameworks, and hedging against possible negative consequences related to China's rise by keeping close relations with external powers such as the U.S.
EAI Issue Briefing on Transition of Wartime Operational Control
This issue briefing by Kyung-young Chung explores the Park Geun-hye administration's request for a review of the planned 2015 transition of wartime operational control. He analyzes the factors behind another potential delay proposed by the South Korean government and argues that it is time for South Korea to take a more comprehensive role in its own security.
Asia Democracy Network Founding Assembly
From October 21 to 22, EAI participated in the Founding Assembly for the Asia Democracy Network (ADN), a joint initiative of the Korea Democracy Network and like-minded civil society organizations and institutions across Asia created with the purpose of expanding democracy in the region. Democracy activists from 21 countries gathered to adopt a Charter of Principles and action plans, along with the establishment of a governance structure.
Conference on "Beyond Trustpolitik on the Korean Peninsula"
EAI held a conference on October 21 to debate the Park Geun-hye administration's North Korea policy initiative and offer an alternative to the trustpolitik approach. EAI's New North Korea Policy research team discussed the future direction of South Korean government's policy toward North Korea with government officials and experts.
Smart Talk with David A. Welch and Paul Evans
EAI invited David A. Welch, chair of global security program at Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), and Paul Evans, professor at the University of British Columbia, on October 17 for its Smart Talk forum. Presenters and South Korean experts debate the role of trust and empathy in Northeast Asian security affairs with a focus on North Korea.
EAI Global Net21 Meeting with Minister of Unification Ryoo Kihl-jae
EAI invited Ryoo Kihl-jae, the minister of Unification, on October 8 for its Global Net 21 Forum, which was moderated by Byung-Kook Kim of Korea University. After welcoming remarks from EAI Chairman Young-Sun Ha, Minister Ryoo delivered a speech entitled: "The Park administration's North Korea Policy."
Latest Issue of Journal of East Asian Studies
The latest edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies has been released. It features articles on guerilla capitalism in the coastal Zhejiang province of China, and alternative paths to party polarization in Japan. Symposium on technology transfers to China, comprising of articles on the analyses of trade-off between economy and security and three country cases of the European Union, Japan, and Israel, is also included. This issue also features five book reviews on East Asian politics and social issues.
Asia Democracy Research Network Inaugural Meeting and Workshop
On behalf of ADN, EAI is holding the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) Inaugural Meeting and Workshop in Seoul from November 25 to 26. EAI is taking a convener role in organizing the Asian democracy-related research network within the wider activities of ADN. Led by EAI along with National Endowment for Democracy (NED) from the U.S. and think tanks from countries such as Japan, Taiwan, Mongolia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Philippines, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, ADRN Workshop will be a forum to strengthen research network on Asian democracy.
