EAI Issue Briefing Middle Power Initiative 2013-02
As part of EAI's Middle Power Diplomacy Initiative (MPDI), which began in early 2013, EAI has published MPDI Issue Briefing No.2. In "ASEAN's Middle Power Diplomacy toward China," Yongwook Ryu argues that ASEAN has adopted a dual strategy in regard to China, simultaneously enmeshing China into the region through economic interdependence and institutional frameworks and hedging against possible negative consequences related to China's rise by keeping close relations with external powers such as the U.S. In addition, Ryu details the lessons South Korea can garner from ASEAN's experiences with China. Supported by the MacArthur Foundation, MPDI strives to: 1) Identify middle powers; 2) Explore issues for a middle power network collaboration to enhance U.S.-China cooperation; and 3) Construct U.S.-China collaboration-friendly middle power networks.
