Based on a close analysis of the U.S. Defense Strategic Guidance, which was presented by President Obama in January 2012, the author examines its impact on South Korea's defense concerns. These include four main areas: possible reductions in the troop size of U.S. Forces in Korea; the prospect for the additional dispatch of U.S. forces during a contingency on the Korean Peninsula; increase in the strategic flexibility of U.S. Forces in Korea; and a growing demand for more burden-sharing in the ROK-U.S. alliance. Along with the assessment of the current situation, the author also recommends that Korean foreign and security policy makers take on a long-term perspective.
