On December 14, 2011, the EAI will hold its 9th Anniversary Evening Gala. This event is an opportunity for the EAI to thank its supporters and recognize their dedication toward helping the institution become one of South Korea's leading think-tanks.

  EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
EAI Working Paper on North Korea's Leadership
Jin-ha Kim's working paper "The Crisis of Succession: Mapping the Paths Into and Out of the Personalist Dictatorship in North Korea" focuses on the third-generation of leadership succession in North Korea. Kim believes that due to the inherent weaknesses of the new emerging leadership, aggressive external policies have been utilized to strengthen the regime.

Smart Q&A with Steve Chan
Following President Obama's visit to East Asia in November 2011 and its broader implications for U.S.-China relations, the EAI talked with EAI Fellow Professor Steve Chan from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Professor Chan gave his views on the prospects for U.S.-China relations over the medium to long-term.

Global Korea Conference
The EAI and the Asia Foundation co-hosted the Global Korea conference on November 30, 2011 under the title of "Is Global Korea Really Global? Assessing South Korean Contributions to International Security." Under the government's slogan of "Global Korea," Seoul has been rapidly expanding its international commitments in recent years. This conference brought together a number of international scholars to present papers addressing how South Korea will manage its global role in new areas ranging from humanitarian aid to anti-piracy missions.

General Bell Joins the Advisory Board
The EAI is pleased to announce General (retired) Burwell B. Bell as the newest member of the EAI's advisory board. Before retiring, General Bell served as Former Commander of United Nations Command/ ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command/ United States Forces Korea from 2006 to 2008.
Expert Seminar with Steve Chan
On November 22, 2011, the EAI held its Expert Seminar with EAI Fellow Professor Steve Chan from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Professor Chan spoke about his working paper entitled "Money Politics: International Credit/Debt as Credible Commitment" which looks at the complex way in which China's holdings of massive U.S. debt has become a form of credible commitment in the bilateral relationship.
Open Forum with Pyeongtaek Citizens
The EAI together with Pyeongtaek City held the Open Forum on November 4, 2011. This event provided an opportunity for Pyeongtaek citizens to engage with experts and local government officials on major issues related to the relocation of U.S. Forces in Korea to the city. The two sessions for this forum focused on "Pyeongtaek Development: Toward a Leading and Competent City" and "Integration of U.S. Military and Local Community in a Multicultural Era."
Expert Seminar with Evelyn Goh
On November 17, 2011, the EAI held its Expert Seminar with EAI Fellow Evelyn Goh from Royal Holloway, University of London. Under the title of "Japan, China, and the Great Power Bargain in East Asia," Evelyn Goh spoke on her working paper that outlines how China and Japan, the two main rivals in East Asia, can manage relations through compromises and a basic understanding of mutual power-sharing.
New Edition of the Journal of East Asian Studies
This new edition includes four articles on democratization and economic development in Indonesia, China's industrial policies, policymaking in Taiwan, and interest rate liberalization in China. There is also a review essay on access to justice in post-Mao China, examining both criminal and administrative law.
2012 EAI Fellows Selected
The EAI is pleased to announce the selection result for the Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia for the academic year 2011-2012, with generous support from the Japan Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taiwan, and YBM/KIS, an education institute of Korea.
