 EAI Commentary: Stuck in the Middle? U.S.-China Relations and the Korean Peninsula
The U.S.-China Summit in January 2011 captured global attention to the current state of relations between the two countries. With many contentious issues coming to the forefront in 2010, the direction in which the bilateral relationship will go in 2011 is of great importance to East Asia and for the rest of the world. This commentary states that the United States and China will seek more stable and positive ties over the next year as both countries are focused on domestic political leadership transitions in 2012. This commentary is also the first EAI product to be simultaneously published in Chinese.

Smart Talk: East Asia - Its Challenges and Risks
The EAI invited Tanaka Hitoshi, senior fellow at the Japan Center for International Exchange, for a Smart Talk seminar held on February 25, 2011. As Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister under Koizumi administration, Mr. Tanaka was instrumental in Japan's engagement of North Korea in the early 2000s. For this Smart Talk, Mr. Tanaka discussed about the future of East Asia by looking at both the short-term challenge of North Korea and the long-term challenge of China.

Mr. Tanaka Hitoshi also participated in Smart Q&A in which he answered questions on North Korea's nuclear threat and resumption of the Six-Party Talks. This video interview can be viewed on the EAI website.

Book Release: The Park Chung Hee Era: The Transformation of South Korea
South Korean President Park Chung Hee ruled South Korea for almost two decades (1961-1979) in which the country witnessed rapid economic growth and development, rising out of poverty to become a major industrialized powerhouse in East Asia. Byung-Kook Kim and Ezra F. Vogel's The Park Chung Hee Era: The Transformation of South Korea looks into this crucial period and analyzes South Korea's modern development.
Book Release: Public Diplomacy and Soft Power in East Asia
The EAI's project "Soft Power in East Asia" has now produced a book volume based on papers submitted to the first Soft Power Conference held in 2008. Published by Palgrave Macmillan, Public Diplomacy and Soft Power in East Asia comprises of contributions from authors across Asia, Europe, and the United States who explore the conceptual, practical, and dynamic aspects of soft power in East Asia. EAI in the Media: An 'economic president' who's bad with politics
Ser Myo-ja's article in the JoongAng Daily on President Lee Myung-bak's performance has made extensive use of the EAI's opinion survey data from its Issue Briefing on Public Opinion. Ser's article outlines how President Lee has lived up to his promise of economic growth, but failed in handling domestic political issues. Currently, 53.6% of respondents in the survey evaluate Lee's performance over the last three years as "bad."
EPIK Essay Competition
With the upcoming EPIK Young Leader Conference, the EAI invites undergraduate and graduate students to participate in this essay competition which will be held on August 17, 2011. The conference is an annual academic event organized by EPIK Spiders, an academic circle created by EAI intern graduates. The essay topic for this year is "Sustainable Future."
