 EAI Ranked 12th Among Think Tanks in Asia
The EAI was selected as one of the leading think tanks in Asia for the "Global Go-To Think Tanks 2010" survey conducted by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, part of the International Relations Program, University of Pennsylvania. For the category of "Top 25 Think Tanks in Asia," the EAI came in at 12th (second among all ranked Korean institutions in this category). Considered to be the insider's guide to global think tanks, this survey was compiled from the selections of more than 1,500 scholars, journalists, policy makers, and experts.

  EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
Smart Talk in Shanghai and Taipei
The EAI in collaboration with its partner institutions in the Asia Security Initiative network held two Smart Talk meetings in Shanghai and Taipei. These talks focused on Northeast Asian Security Challenges with specific focus on the rise of China, the North Korea issue, and Cross-Straits relations. The meetings were held at Jiao Tong University's Center for RimPac Strategic and International Studies in Shanghai and at National Chengchi University in Taipei.

Commentary on Japan's New Defense Guidelines
Japan's recent release of its defense plan, known as the National Defense Program Guidelines sets out the Democratic Party of Japan's new posture on the country's national security. Looking at the process involved and the implications, Young-June Park demonstrates how the broad societal consensus resulted in a comprehensive plan for an uncertain future. Such an approach could also benefit South Korean policymakers in constructing their own defense guidelines.

Ambivalence toward North Korea: South Korean Public Perceptions Following the Attack on Yeonpyeong Island
Based upon the EAI's Public Opinion Barometer survey, this Issue Briefing explores the changing perceptions among South Koreans toward North Korea's provocations in 2010. The results from the survey show the ambivalence among the public favoring tougher measures against North Korea while not yet willing to abandon engagement policies.

Selected Scholars for EAI Fellows Program 2010-11
The EAI is pleased to announce the results of the scholars selected for the EAI Fellows Program 2010-11. Made up of representatives from the five participating institutions in the program, the Selection Committee chose five scholars among many applicants for the program that is supported by the Japan Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taiwan, and YBM/KIS, an education institute of Korea. The results and further details can be found on the website.
EPIK Essay Competition
With the upcoming EPIK Young Leader Conference, the EAI invites undergraduate and graduate students to participate in this essay competition which will be held on August 17, 2011. The conference is an annual academic event organized by EPIK Spiders, an academic circle created by EAI intern graduates. The essay topic for this year is "Sustainable Future."
