Commentary on North Korea's Succession Issue
The evident promotion of Kim Jong Il's son, Kim Jong-un, has revealed publically for the first time North Korea's succession process. Young, inexperienced, and unknown to the outside world, Kim Jong-un faces many challenges ahead in reviving the North Korean economy and resolving the nuclear crisis. This commentary examines the dilemmas that he faces and the way in which he and neighboring states can resolve the problem of the future of North Korea.

Working Paper on Transformation of North Korea
On its current course, focused on military-first politics, North Korea faces potential collapse. Seongji Woo focuses on how North Korea can transform itself from a fortress state huddled around nuclear weapons to an amphibious state that embraces both sea and land powers.

Smart Talk 10 with Holli A. Semetko on Political Communication
With the recent mid-term elections in the United States and the dramatic outcome of the local elections in South Korea, the development of political communication has drawn close attention. Holli Semetko (Emory University) presented on the field of study on Political Communication and its future direction. Together with a panel of South Korean experts, they discussed some of the main trends within this field.

EAI · Transatlantic Academy Workshop
In the Post-Crisis era, the shift of power from West to East raises many issues about the future of the global regional order. The EAI together with the Transatlantic Academy held a workshop on October 18, 2010 under the title of "Global Shift: Implications of a Post-Western World." There were three sessions for this workshop looking at the issues of economics, global governance, and security competition.

Last Call: Application for the EAI Fellows Program 2010-2011
The EAI invites applications for its 2010-2011 Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia. Funded by the Japan Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taiwan, and YBM/KIS, an education institute of Korea, the Fellows Program is targeting East Asia specialists. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2010.
