EAI · CCGA Collaboration Conference on Soft Power
The Chicago Council for Global Affairs (CCGA) and the EAI hosted a special two day conference in Chicago in October, 2009. This conference included 30 American and Asian participants to discuss the implications of the financial crisis for American, Chinese, South Korean, and Japanese soft power in East Asia.

Third Korea-U.S. Alliance Conference
The third Korea-U.S. Alliance Conference was held on November 3rd focused on "An ROK-U.S. Alliance for the 21st Century." The first session hosted former Senior Secretary for Foreign Affairs and National Security, Byung-Kook Kim (Korea University) and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Thomas J. Christensen (Princeton University) who delivered lectures on the topic of "Korea-U.S. alliance and Peace in East Asia." In the second session, a Roundtable discussion took place with scholars from the U.S. and Northeast Asia discussing on the topic of security alliance in the region.

GlobalNet 21 Meeting 17
"North Korea Nuclear Issues and North-South Korean relationship"

The EAI invited Minister In-taek Hyun (Ministry of Unification) to the 17th GlobalNet 21 meeting on October 28th, 2009, to discuss and look at the issues on resolving the North Korea nuclear crisis.

5th Expert Seminar with Saori N. Katada
The 5th Expert Seminar took place with Saori N. Katada presenting on "Politics that Constrains: The Logic of Fragmented Regionalism in East Asia."

Survey Research on Social Status: Boosting the Middle Class
The EAI and JoonAngIlbo launched a research team to address the issue of the shrinking middle class in Korea and to provide effective prescriptions to boost the middle class. A public opinion survey to reveal "the current status" and "perceptions and identities" of the Korean middle class forms the basis of the study.
