 The third Korea-U.S. Alliance Conference |

The EAI, with the support from the Pyongtaek City, will host the third Korea-US Alliance Conference on November 3, 2009 at Lotte Hotel Seoul. At the conference, former Senior Secretary for Foreign Affairs and National Security, Byung-Kook Kim (Korea University) and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Tom J. Christensen (Princeton University) will deliver a public lecture on the topic of "Toward Smart ROK-U.S. Alliance." Following the lecture, a roundtable discussion will take place inviting experts from Korea, the U.S., China, and Japan to discuss the topic of security alliance in East Asia.

"Japan under the DPJ: Changes in Foreign and Defense Policies"
On August 31, 2009 the Democratic Party of Japan's (DPJ) landslide victory in the country's national election brought fifty-four years of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) political dominance to an end. The DPJ won 308 of the 480 seats in the Lower House. Combined with 118 of the 237 seats in the Upper House that it won in July 2007, for the first time, the DPJ now controls both houses.

The EAI's Asia Security Initiative Research Center will organize the 4th Smart Talk seminar on October 16th, 2009. Dr. Marcus Noland is going to present the paper entitled, "United States Economic Policy Toward Asia." EAI-JPI Peace Conference
The EAI and the Jeju Peace Institute (JPI) hosted the East Asia Peace Conference as part of a joint collaboration at Caladium Hall, PJ Hotel on September 11th, 2009. The conference had three sessions: Session I was titled "Security in East Asia: Transformation of Alliance and Regional Cooperation," Session II was titled "Peace in East Asia and North Korea," and Session III was a round-table discussion.
