[MPDI Working Paper No.3] Korea's Strategy for Regional and Global Financial Governance: From Rule Taker to Rule Setter?_Yong Wook Lee

[U.S.-China Relations Statement Factsheet] July 2014

Korea's Strategy for Regional and Global Financial Governance: From Rule Taker to Rule Setter?
In the third installment of EAI's Middle Power Diplomacy Initiative (MPDI) working paper series, Professor Yong Wook Lee, Associate Professor of Political Science at Korea University, claims that South Korea has emerged from being a rule taker to a rule setter in the financial governance of East Asia. He argues that South Korea should make multilateralism, especially that which links regional and global dynamics, the cornerstone of Korean financial and monetary diplomacy. Yet cautions that this should be done without the loss of policy autonomy. He also recommends using an approach of exercising global influence derived from solidifying regional multilateralism and at the same time striving to become an ‘honest broker’ between countries. This is in order to secure policy goals such as exchange rates stability, financial market development, and financial stability.

This month's factsheet also tracks the announcement of China's "Major Countries Relationship" following the strategic dialogue between China and the U.S. It also monitors cooperation on cybersecurity measures, positions on human rights and the situation on the Korean peninsula.
