 Investing in the Future: EAI Young Festival 2014
On August 13th 2014, the EAI reaffirmed its commitment to investing in the leaders of tomorrow by hosting this year’s edition of the EAI Young Festival. The lively and joyful celebration crowned another successful year for the EAI’s youth programs that include the EAI Sarangbang program, Korea Friendship program, EAI Internship program, EAI Scholarship Program and EPIK Young Leaders Conference. These programs brought together Korean and International students and offered valuable experiences to their participants, providing insights into the world of think tanks, academics and providing tangible real world working experiences.

EAI Fellows Program Selects Recipients for 2015
The East Asia Institute is pleased to announce the selection result of the “Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia” for the academic year 2014-2015. The five recipients of the EAI Fellowship are: Allen Carlson, Associate Professor, Cornell University; Rosemary Foot, Professor, University of Oxford; Alex Dukalskis, Lecturer, University College Dublin; Seung-youn Oh, Assistant Professor, Bryn Mawr College; and Yongwook Ryu, Assistant Professor, The Australian National University. The five fellows will visit the EAI and other participating institutions over two weeks, presenting papers based on original research that relate to East Asia and major challenges, designed specifically for the EAI Fellows Program. The EAI Fellows Program is made possible by the generous support of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taiwan, and YBM/KIS, an educational institute based in Korea.

Courting Controversy: June Edition of the UCR Series Factsheet Out Now
The June edition of the U.S.-China Relations (UCR) statement factsheet has been christened as “The Dance of the Summer; Courting Controversy” in reflection of the growing number of tense encounters in the region. As China grapples with its own expanding clout, greater possibility of conflicts flaring into full blown disputes looms over the region. The official statements released by both the U.S. and China in June betray this underlying tension. Growing instability in Europe and the Middle East also capture the attention of both states’ officials and their subsequent statements. Dating back to October 2010, the UCR series is an ongoing publication that tracks official statements in order to provide a better understanding of the current and future relations between the U.S. and China. 2014 EPIK Young Leaders Conference
Into its 5th year, the EAI EPIK Young Leaders conference was held at the Kukdo Hotel on Wednesday August 13th, organized by the EPIK Spiders (a group of past EPIK participants and EAI interns). The EAI EPIK Young Leaders Conference aims to promote academic exchange between students on areas such as international politics, security, economics, business management and a variety of other areas. This year’s theme was: “Followership: A New Approach to Understanding Leadership.” The two papers selected as the best submitted by the conference participants were authored by Lee Hyun Soo of the University of Amsterdam and Raphael Kunz of Seoul National University. EPIK is the “Exchange Panel for Interdisciplinary Knowledge” and is a network of students scattered throughout distinguished universities around the world. Members of this network readily exchange ideas that helps to broaden the minds and perspectives of students in different parts of the globe.
2014 Next Generation Conference
The EAI Next Generation Conference brings together essays written by participants of the Korea Friendship Project. This project brings together international and domestic students in order to foster exchange and learning on different areas of Korean society and culture. The essays submitted were based on one of the eight lectures delivered over the course of the Korea Friendship Academicus series. This year the best essay award went to Mei Ling Jiang from China, for her essay titled “Why does Korea live in the infamy of a suicide-republic?” Two excellence awards were given to Luiza Sakhabutdinova from Uzbekistan, who presented an essay titled “Why did Japanese fail to become the second language in Korea after the Independence in 1945?” and Jielin Wen from China, who presented the essay titled “Research on Korea’s food prices.”
Analysis Report on the 2nd Joint Korea-Japan Public Opinion Poll Released to the Public
Throughout May and June of this year, the EAI in conjunction with Japanese nonprofit organization, The Genron NPO, conducted joint opinion polls in both Korea and Japan that sought to gauge public opinion on the state of relations between the two nations. The results of the survey and a brief analysis of what these results may indicate about the state of mutual understanding between the two nations are available on our website.

EAI Gears Up for The Korea Global Forum 2014
On September 25, the EAI in partnership with the Ministry of Unification will host the latest edition of the Korea Global Forum (KGF) at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul. The theme of this year’s KGF is “Trust, Peace and Prosperity: Path to Korean Unification”, and it aims to promote the peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula within the Northeast Asia security environment. This year’s public lecture will be delivered by renowned expert Kurt Campbell, the Chairman and CEO of The Asia Group and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs. This year’s forum will also bring together government officials and nongovernmental experts from various countries including Korea, the U.S., China, Japan, Russia, England, Germany, France, Australia, and Singapore.
