EAI Middle Power Diplomacy Initiative
Policy Recommendation: East Asian Security
Chaesung Chun, EAI & Seoul National University

Chaesung Chun presents the latest set of policy recommendations for Korea's middle power diplomacy. Against the backdrop of great power competition fueled by resilient power balancing, strengthening power transition, and rise of China, Chun emphasizes that the main purpose of South Korea as a middle power is to contribute to enhancing systemic stability and flexibility to absorb the impacts of great powers’ rivalry. Chun suggests that South Korea should use the North Korean nuclear problem to strengthen regional multilateral security cooperative model and increase its participation in global affairs, while looking to transform its alliance with the U.S. to broaden its role as a guarantor of regional security.
