2012 EPIK Young Leaders Conference: Essay Competition

The East Asia Institute (EAI) invites undergraduate and master’s degree students (including recent graduates) to share their vision on the critical challenges facing the global community through the "EPIK Young Leaders Conference 2012: Essay Competition." The EPIK Young Leaders Conference, an academic forum for sharing a global mindset among young people, has now become an annual event following the successful inaugural conference in 2010.

 

In light of the global challenges lying ahead, the role of youth in addressing these challenges grows ever important. This essay competition strives to offer a great opportunity for students not only to present their innovative ideas but also to enrich the extensive networks with each other by exchanging views. We encourage you to think analytically, creatively, and strategically while participating in the "EPIK Young Leaders Conference 2012: Essay Competition."

The world is moving along a dynamic path of change. Traditional boundaries of values, institutions, and governance are ever more challenged by new ideas that emerge not only through technological innovation, but also from socio-political development and other unforeseen channels of change.

 

The EPIK Young Leaders Conference 2012 calls for student papers that can draw new lines to better understand the ongoing transformation of our global environment. To this end, participants can choose one or more of the issue areas included below.

 

Selected papers will be presented at the conference with notable experts and peer readers in the summer of 2012.

 

Contest Details

The contest is open to domestic/overseas undergraduates and master’s degree students (including recent graduates). After two rounds of competition, the finalists will participate and present their essays at the conference on August 14, 2012.

 

Application Process

1. Essays must be submitted by undergraduate and master’s degree students.(incl. recent graduates)

2. Essays must be approximately 5,000 words in English.

3. Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.

4. Entries must be submitted by email (epik2012@eai.or.kr) only.

5. Email entries must be in MS Word format.

6. All submissions must be original and unpublished.

7. The EPIK Young Leaders Conference is conducted in English.

8. After two rounds of competition, the finalists will have an opportunity to get feedback from the advisory committee members and present their papers at the conference on August 14, 2012.

 

Deadline/Submission Application must be submitted no later than March 28, 2012. Application includes a 400 word proposal, resume with cover letter, and registration form (can be downloaded at epik.eai.or.kr). [Download]

 

Important Dates

 

1) 1st Round

March 28, 2012: Application Submission (application form, 400 words proposal, resume, and cover letter).

April 20, 2012: The result for the first round to be announced.

 

2) 2nd Round

June 20, 2012: Deadline for the first draft (approximately 5,000 words)

July 10, 2012: The final selections to be announced.

 

3) 3rd Round

August 10, 2012: Deadline for the final draft (approximately 5,000 words) after consultation with the advisory committee members.

 

4) EPIK Young Leaders Conference 2012

August 14, 2012: Essay presentation and award ceremony

 

The finalists will be presenting their papers at the EPIK Young Leaders Conference on August 14, 2012. Presented papers will be published online as a series of EPIK Journals Online at EAI website.

 

Award

1st prize: 1,000,000 KRW (one person)

2nd prize: 500,000 KRW (two persons)
