ROK-US Think Tank Joint Seminar
"Public-led Communication and Understanding between South Korea and the U.S."

EAI, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted a Joint Conference on ROK-US Public Diplomacy on October 19th and 20th. The purpose of the seminar, which was held for the second year in a row, was to establish a foundation for cooperation and mutual understanding in the public realm through communication and exchange among South Korean and U.S.-based policy think tanks. In addition, the seminar aimed to create a space wherein the South Korean government and civilian experts could meet with influential American figures and experts on the subject and elicit understanding of South Korea and its foreign policy through direct communication and build sustainable friendly relations between the two sides. Both open and closed seminars were held with the Harvard University Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs on October 19th and with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on October 20th, discussing the North Korean issue and the current state of the Korean Peninsula, changes in US foreign policy towards the Korean Peninsula after the presidential election, and responses. Korean representatives in attendance included Professor Byung-Yeon Kim of Seoul National University; In-kook Park, President of the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies; Beomchul Shin, researcher at the Korean Institute for Defense Analysis; Sung Lac Wi, former Ambassador of South Korea to Russia; and Sook Jong Lee, President of the East Asia Institute.
