The paper examines the governing structure in China and evaluates the practices of transforming the Chinese state from “planner to regulator” following the economic reforms. Yukyung Yeo explains how informal institutions and party leadership exert regulatory controls to shape and influence policies and directions of industries critical to the national economy. Regarding the resilience and sustainability of this system, Yeo predicts that the central party’s political and economic control is very likely to continue in the near future. pc   mobile
