In this interview, Dr. Kurt Campbell, the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State and the key architect of current U.S. strategy in Asia, and Dr. Chaesung Chun, Chair of the Asia Security Initiative Research Center at EAI discussed U.S. perspectives on the regional dynamics in East Asia including the difficulties in dealing with North Korea. In light of the growing concern over Pyongyang’s miscalculated provocation, both agreed that a continued effort toward dialogue and regional coordination needs to be bolstered. As for Korean unification, Dr. Campbell stressed that while it will be up to the Korean people to decide, the U.S. will be fully committed to maintain a robust relationship with a unified Korea. Concerns over the perceived rise of a U.S.-China rivalry were also discussed, but it was noted that neither the U.S. nor China would push countries to choose sides. Finally, Dr. Campbell shared his concerns over Japan’s troubled relationship with China as well as Korea, and argued that the U.S. should actively signal its desire for improved Korea-Japan and China-Japan relations.
