Will Japan Overcome Abe’s Revisionist Tendencies?
Growing Concerns over Japan in Northeast Asia

T.J. Pempel, Professor at the Department of Political Science, U.C. Berkeley
Yul Sohn, Chair of EAI’s Center for Japan Studies
Professor T.J. Pempel of UC Berkeley was joined by EAI's Yul Sohn to discuss the topic of historical revisionism in Japan. Pempel and Sohn pointed out that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's historical revisionism and right-wing policies are not only problematic for South Korea, China and the U.S., but also harmful for Japan as its regional relations deteriorate. With respect to South Korea-Japan relations and Northeast Asian regionalism, the two discussants mutually agreed on the importance of trust, which needs to be strengthened by South Korea's Northeast Asian Peace and Cooperation Initiative as well as the trilateral summit between South Korea, Japan, and China.
