New Asia Security Initiative Issue Briefing

The latest issue briefing is now available. In "Muddling Along with Missiles," Professor Dongho Jo (Ewha Womans University) evaluates the economic aspects of North Korea's recent missile tests. This issue briefing addresses the economic motivations behind the tests by examining North Korea's proliferation of missile s and the correlation with its failing economy.

EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
Smart Talk 3: Mike Mochizuki, George Washington University
The 3rd Smart Talk took place on July 8th with Mike Mochizuki from the Elliot School of International Studies, George Washington University. Professor Mochizuki holds Elliott School's endowed chair in Japan-U.S. Relations in Memory of Gaston Sigur. For this Smart Talk he discussed "Reconciling Rivals: War, Memory, and Security in East Asia."

Smart Talk 2: Charles L. Pritchard, President of Korea Economic Institute
The summary of the 2nd Smart Talk with Charles L. Pritchard on "The North Korean Nuclear Threat" is available. Ambassador Pritchard served as ambassador and special envoy for negotiations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and United States representative to the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization in the administration of President George W. Bush from April 2001 until September 2003.

Selected Scholars for EAI Fellows Program 2009-10
The East Asia Institute is pleased to announce the selection of "EAI Fellows on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia" for the academic year 2009-2010, with support from the Henry Luce Foundation of New York and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taipei.

EAI in the Media: Credibility Low for DP, GNP: Survey
As part of the Public Trust and Influence of Power Organizations program, the results of a recent joint survey conducted by JoongAng Ilbo and the EAI have been published. Appearing in an article for the JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, the results show that the Grand National Party and the Democratic Party, South Korea's two major political parties, now have the lowest credibility rating among 25 corporate, political and government organizations surveyed.

2009 EAI Global Academy and EAI Fellows Program

 The 4th Experts Seminar took place on July 8th with EAI Fellows. In the 4th seminar William W. Grimes (Boston University) presented on the topic of "The Global Financial Crisis and East Asia: Testing the Regional Financial Architecture."

 The 5th Global Academy seminar was held on July 7th with William W. Grimes hosting a lively discussion with selected students from South Korea. Professor Yong-wook Lee (Korea University) was the moderator for the seminar.
