[Global NK Interview] Conversation with Former US Special Envoy for DPRK Human Rights

In light of the Biden administration’s recent decision to appoint Julie Turner as the Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues, EAI invited former Ambassador Robert King to share his past experience in the same position and provide his assessment of the current human rights situation in North Korea. Ambassador King elaborates on the various responsibilities of the Special Envoy for DPRK Human Rights, ranging from conducting international diplomacy to leading negotiations on humanitarian aid. He assessed that while the Special Envoy should have been appointed earlier, the recent nomination nevertheless shows an improvement in the United States’ DPRK policy. In spite of the pandemic that has further limited foreign access to information, he highlights the importance of satellite imagery in identifying the ongoing human rights violation of the Kim Jong Un regime. Finally, Ambassador King argues that while the U.S. Government has been making consistent efforts to bring North Korea to the negotiating table, the DPRK human rights problem is still locked in a stalemate due to the North’s unwillingness to engage.
