China’s Stance on North Korea’s “New Cold War” Narrative

Dong Ryul Lee, Chair of the China Research Center at EAI (Professor at Dongduk Women’s University), highlights that although China and North Korea might seem to have a close relationship, Beijing maintains a reserved stance regarding the North’s perspective on its strategic value amid the US-China competition. Professor Lee explains that Xi Jinping prioritizes political stability by boosting the economy and tries to avoid a full-scale confrontation with Washington. Accordingly, China seeks to manage the risk spurred on by Pyongyang’s military provocations, given that they legitimize stronger US-Japan-ROK trilateral security cooperation.

 

[Global NK Interview] Human Rights Situations in North Korea after the Pandemic

In spite of the pandemic that has further limited foreign access to information, Ambassador Robert King, Former U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues, highlights the importance of satellite imagery in identifying the ongoing human rights violation of the Kim Jong Un regime. Ambassador King also argues that while the US Government has been making consistent efforts to bring North Korea to the negotiating table, the DPRK human rights problem is still locked in a stalemate due to the North’s unwillingness to engage.
