 MPDI Issue Briefing No. 1 "China's Perceptions and Policies Toward India"
In this briefing, Byung Kwang Park, a senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy, explores the implications of the "strategic and cooperative partnership" forged between China and India. Furthermore, he argues that the U.S. "pivot to Asia" strategy plays a significant role in shaping China's engagement policy toward India.

 EAI-CISAC Conference on "Future Direction for ROK-U.S. Nuclear Cooperation"
On September 13, EAI and CISAC presented their research findings at a conference on "Future Direction for ROK-U.S. Nuclear Cooperation." Evaluations of the current state and the future of ROK-U.S. nuclear cooperation were followed by in-depth discussions with experts in the field.

 The Fourth Roundtable Discussion for Middle Power Diplomacy
EAI invited Mr. William Paterson, ambassador of Australia to South Korea, on September 26 to a discussion focused on the ability for middle-power nations to promote their own interests, while championing those of the greater international community. The ambassador spoke in detail regarding the recent informal talk on the future role of middle powers that was held on September 25 in New York City at the United Nations among South Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Turkey, and Mexico.

Five Scholars Selected for 2013-2014 EAI Fellows Program
 EAI announced the selection results for this academic year's "Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia". Five scholars were chosen for the program, which invites non-Asia based East Asian specialists with cutting-edge expertise in political science, international relations, and sociology for an international exchange program that encourages interdisciplinary research with a comparative perspective on the study of East Asia.

EPIK Journals Online Publication, Vol. 4: Session 1 and 2
 On September 3, EAI announced the winner of the 2013 EPIK Young Leaders Essay Competition. A call for essays was sent to members of the EPIK Spiders - a group of past EAI interns - and presented last month at a Young Leaders conference. Hoo Ri Kim, of the University of California, Berkeley, took first place with an essay titled "The Arab Spring: Is Conflict Really Better than Cooperation?"

EAI Participated in Consular Forum held in London
From September 3 to 5, EAI participated in the Consular Forum, which was held in London. This forum brought to-gether senior consular officials from 24 countries, alongside selected academics from seven research institutions, to discuss contemporary issues and emerging opportunities facing consular services. EAI was joined by participants from the Lowy Institute for International Policy (Australia), the Leuven Center for Global Governance Studies (Belgium), the Munk School of Global Affairs (Canada), the Chinese Foreign Affairs University, Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economicas (Mexico), and the Clingendael Institute (the Netherlands).

Council of Councils' Fourth Regional Conference
EAI sent two representatives to the Council of Council's fourth regional conference entitled "Europe and the Future of Global Governance" from September 9-10. Dr. Nae-Young Lee, a professor in the department of political science and international relations at Korea University, and Dr. Seungjoo Lee, an assistant professor in the department of political science and international relations at Chungang University, attended the conference, part of an initiative launched by the Council on Foreign Relations to connect leading foreign policy institutes from around the world.

Upcoming Event: Inaugural Meeting of Asia Democracy Network in Seoul
The Asia Democracy Network (ADN), an initiative led by EAI, is organizing an inaugural meeting at the Seoul Olympic Parktel from October 21 to 22. With over 100 organizations from 26 countries, ADN will bring together civil-society networks from countries all over Asia, linking them with region-based think tanks to develop a knowledge-based understanding of democracy issues. As a representative think tank for Korea, EAI collaborated with the Korea Democracy Foundation, Korea Human Rights Foundation, and Center for Korean Women & Politics to create the Korea Democracy Network (KDN) and contribute significantly to the inauguration of the ADN.
