  • 2016-10-19
East Asia Institute, the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS), and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University jointly held an open seminar titled “Navigating Tensions on the Korean Peninsula” and a closed door seminar on “Recent Developments on the Korean Peninsula & the Next U.S. Administration’s Policy toward the Korean Peninsula” on October 19th, 2016. Participants discussed the position of the U.S. on the durability of extended deterrence, inter-Korean relations amid continued North Korean advancements in its nuclear and missile programs, implications of deepening Sino-DPRK commercial ties, and South Korea-China relations amid the deployment of the THAAD ballistic missile defense system. During the closed session, participants shared their views on recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and Washington’s response to growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula under a new U.S. administration.

This seminar was organized with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and KFAS for the purpose of promoting dialogue and the exchange of ideas between the Korean delegation, which consisted of

academics and government officials, and influential members of the U.S. public/private sectors, and to strengthen cooperation while promoting a better understanding of think tanks in South Korea and the U.S.
