Expert Seminar with Professor Leonardo Arriola

  • 2015-11-10

EAI held an Expert Seminar on November 10, 2015 with Professor Leonardo Arriola from University of California, Berkeley. In this seminar, Professor Arriola discussed his research entitled “Elite Cooperation and Opposition Fragmentation in Electoral Authoritarian Regimes.” He argued that even after the establishment of a multi-party system, authoritarian leaders in Africa have been able to extend their tenure in office by increasing the circulation of elite patronage. Authoritarian leaders strategically replace cabinet ministers on a regular basis, thereby setting off fierce competition among opponents for the appointment and inducing divisions within the coalition, Professor Arriola explained. As a consequence, incumbent leaders maintain their power benefitting from the lack of cohesion in opposition.
