Expert Roundtable with Prof. Joseph Wong

  • 2015-02-25

The EAI held an Expert Roundtable on the topic of “The Strength to Concede: Ruling Parties and Democratization in Developmental Asia” with Professor Joseph Wong and distinguished Korean experts in democracy. Professor Joseph Wong introduced his “democracy through strength” theory, which he also published in the APSA journal, “Perspectives on Politics,” co authored with colleague Dan Slater. He also outlined the tenets of his "Conceding-to-Thrive" theory, which runs contrary to conventional wisdom that purports authoritarian regimes usually concede to democracy and free election from a position of weakness or crisis and analyzed democratic transitions in Asia such as South Korea, Taiwan, China and Indonesia, within this framework.
