“Expanding the International Role of Korean Think Tanks” Forum

  • 2015-01-22
On January 22nd, the East Asia Institute (EAI) held a forum titled “Expanding the International Role of Korean Think Tanks” in partnership with the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and Hankyung Magazine. Based on the “Global Go To Think Tank Index” reported by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania, this forum brought together heads of government and non-profit think tanks, as well as a corporate foundation to discuss how to empower domestic think tanks. In Session 1, participants analyzed the global connectedness of Korean think tanks through the examples of the KIEP and Korea Development Institute (KDI). The session also discussed the future direction for development and policy research in the field. In Session 2, the various kinds of think tanks and the political/social landscape in which they operate were discussed. Additionally, participants also considered the factors required to create an empowering environment for think tanks, future challenges such as maintaining stable funding sources and keeping up with dynamic policy research, and developed possible responses to such challenges
