[KF Korea Workshop 3] “Seoul, a City with 2000 Years of History”
The KF Korea Workshop is hosted by the Korea Foundation and organized by the East Asia Institute to promote and share understanding of Korean social, political, and economic issues among international residents in Korea.
During the third 2018 KF Workshop, the first lecture will be delivered by Hee-Kwon Shin, Professor of Korean History at the University of Seoul. Professor Shin’s lecture will be on the topic of “Seoul, A Historical City of Two Thousand Years.”He is currently working as an expert on cultural heritage and assets for the City of Seoul.
Professor Shin will discuss the history of Seoul, beginning from the discovery of the Pungnaptoseong Fortress. Previous historiographies of Seoul began with the Chosun Dynasty and its 600-year old history. However, as the remains of Pungnaptoseong Fortress and the HanseongBaekjae Dynasty were identified, they highlighted not only the history of Seoul, but also the historical significance of the sites of the Woongjin and Sabi periods. The discovery of these historical sites and remains have presented the need and importance for excavation and preservation of cultural heritage.
