[KF Korea Workshop 2] 30 years after the democratization

The KF Korea Workshop is hosted by the Korea Foundation and organized by the East Asia Institute to promote and share understanding of Korean social, political, and economic issues among international residents in Korea.

The 2018 KF Korea Workshop 2 invited Kang Won-Taek, a political science and international studies professor at Seoul National University, as our first speaker to give a lecture on the topic “Korean Democracy: Challenges and Development”. Professor Kang served as the former president of the Korean Political Science Association and the Korean Association of Political Party Studies. He is currently working as a professor of political science and international studies at Seoul National University. During the lecture, he explained the history of Korean politics from 1987 to today and discussed Korea’s democratization.

Unlike Eastern European countries, where democratization was achieved through regime change, Korean democratization was accomplished through compromise between the authoritarian and democratic forces. Thus, after democratization in 1987, Korea experienced instability in its domestic politics. However, the recent candlelight vigils and peaceful removal of former President Park Geun-hye from office illustrate the success of Korea’s democratic consolidation. Professor Kang primarily centered his lecture on the most recent thirty years of Korean politics and the characteristics that describe Korean democracy. He ended the lecture with a discussion on the political stance that both Korea and Korean politicians should have in order to build a more stable democracy in the future.
