Lecture 7

East Asia Institute (EAI) and Korea Foundation co-hosted on the KF-EAI Korea Friendship event, a series of educational and networking program, for international students residing in South Korea. There are 7 consecutive lectures on Korea and 1 field trip on Korean history.

Dr. Shin Hee-Kwon, a professor at the University of Seoul, lectured on Joseon Dynasty and the transition from Joseon to the Republic of Korea. In addition, in order to understand a country’s cultural standard, it is extremely important to understand the capital. Through the illustration of pictures, he explained that Jongno Cheonggyecheon was the capital of Joseon Dynasty.

The lecturer explained the establishment from Joseon Dynasty to the collapse of Korean empire with the general historical background and the architecture of the palaces. Also, through pictures, he traced historical marks of ancient buildings and sites, such as Seodaemun, Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwamun, and Changdeokgung, and figures, such as Ko Jong and Soon Jong.

Lastly, he introduced Hanyang Doseong to our participants. He mentioned that archaeologists excavated cultural assets from Hanyang Doseong that contribute to the discovery of the Korean culture. Eventually, he hopes that Hanyang Doseong will be listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritages.
