"Asian Democracy through the Various Looking Glasses"
Initiated and led by the East Asia Institute, the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) published four working papers in the year 2015-2016. ADRN is an independent network of democracy research institutions across Asia. It analyzes the challenges and tasks facing democracy in the region and expands the scope of action-oriented, policy-driven research that supports the advocacy activities of Asian civil society organizations in promoting, consolidating, and deepening democracy.

Thawilwadee Bureekul and Ratchawadee Sangmahamad of King Prajadhipok’s Institute focus on the gender dimensions of support for democracy in Thailand. Jung Kim at the University of North Korean Studies uses global data to analyze different reasons why South Korea’s democracy is in a perilous position. Kaustuv Bandyopadhyay and Kaustuv Chakrabarti of the Society for Participatory Research in Asia look at shrinking civic space through the perspectives of freedom of association, expression, and assembly. Young-Hwan Shin from the East Asia Institute (EAI) explains the emergence of a new form of development assistance, trilateral cooperation, through EAI’s development program focused on the promotion of democratization in Myanmar.
