The Sunnylands Initiative Special Convening in Seoul

The East Asia Institute (EAI), in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), hosted a Special Convening of the Sunnylands Initiative in Seoul. Thought leaders gathered on February 1-2 to reaffirm their commitment to enhancing democratic partnership in the Indo-Pacific region. The participants issued a joint statement with policy recommendations to the South Korean government in the run-up to the Third Summit for Democracy.

The Sunnylands Initiative was established in January 2020 to bring together democracy leaders from across the Indo-Pacific region to discuss challenges, identify opportunities, and propose concrete actions for advancing democratic norms and governance.

2024 U.S. Presidential Election and the Future of Korean Peninsula

(English Transcript)

Victor Cha, Senior Vice President for Asia and Korea Chair at CSIS, predicts that while North Korean provocations will increase this year in light of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, but these will be very limited and tactical in scope. Cha assesses that the improvement of Kim-Putin relations will not only provide an unprecedented opportunity for North Korea to advance its weapons program, but will also encourage China to engage more actively with the regime to avoid losing its relative influence. Finally, he suggests that because election outcome is unpredictable, the South Korean government should focus more on solidifying cooperation with the current Biden administration.
