The East Asia Institute (EAI) is delighted to invite you to a half-day conference, “Nuclear Competition and Escalation Pathways in East Asia: ROK, US, and PRC Perspectives on Cooperation for the Future of the Korean Peninsula,” featuring esteemed American and Chinese security experts from Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center, Beijing University, and Grandview Institution. In light of the pressing security challenges posed by DPRK’s nuclear threat and US-PRC strategic competition, please join us on May 10, 2023, at 9:30 AM at The Westin Josun Seoul to discuss new approaches and ideas to establish a sustainable security framework on the Korean Peninsula. Jechun Kim, a professor at Sogang University, points out that the Biden administration appears to prioritize competition with China, the Taiwan issue, and the Ukraine War, despite the growing threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities. In response, Professor Kim underlines the importance of issuing a “2023 US-ROK Joint Statement on North Korea” after President Yoon’s visit to the White House. Given the fading interest and support for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula, Professor Kim emphasizes the significance of addressing the rapid advancement of DPRK's nuclear capabilities. He then suggests that South Korea needs to create a conducive environment for peaceful reunification by securing a strong support from the U.S. for President Yoon's "Audacious Initiative."
