[Global NK Interview] U.S.-China Relations After “Two Sessions 2023” and the Future of the Korean Peninsula

Dr. Douglas H. Paal, a Distinguished Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, shares his assessments of the outcome and the implications of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC). Dr. Paal argues that Xi Jinping’s one-man rule is bound to face troubles due to its innate inefficiency, but Xi and Biden should take advantage of their enhanced positions to seek for cooperation and avoid clash. Given that North Korea continues to exploit the opportunities from Beijing and Moscow since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Dr. Paal expresses support for improved ROK-Japan relations and calls for renewed trilateral diplomatic ammunitions to counter the DPRK threat.
