[Global NK Interview] U.S.-China Relations After “Two Sessions 2023” and the Future of the Korean Peninsula

Dr. Douglas H. Paal, a Distinguished Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, shares his assessments of the outcome and the implications of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC). Dr. Paal argues that while Xi Jinping’s one-man rule is bound to face troubles due to its innate inefficiency, Xi and Biden should take advantage of their enhanced positions to seek for cooperation and avoid clash. The recent Iran-Saudi Arabia Deal and Xi’s upcoming conversations with Zelenskyy and Putin demonstrate the Chinese leader’s drive to play a “global peacemaker” role. With this geopolitical context and North Korea’s continued move to exploit its opportunities from Beijing and Moscow, Dr. Paal expresses support for improved ROK-Japan relations and calls for renewed trilateral diplomatic ammunitions to counter the DPRK threat.
