The Impact of the Millennials and Gen Z
on Democracy in Northeast Asia
The active involvement of younger generations in the policymaking process is of significant importance for the sustainability of democracy. In order to address issues of generational gaps in Northeast Asia, the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) conducted joint research examining cases from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Mongolia. The issue briefing series explores how youth in each country perceives democracy, and offers recommendations for governments, political parties, and civil society organizations to engage youth in their processes.

Jaewoo Jun, Associate Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, challenges the prevailing characterization of recent North Korea-China relations as “abnormal,” arguing instead that such fluctuations are emblematic of North Korea’s longstanding strategy of maneuvering as an autonomous intermediary amid great power rivalry. Dr. Jun substantiates this claim through a historical analysis of North Korea’s diplomatic engagements with both China and Russia during the Cold War, ultimately concluding that the ostensible chill in North Korea-China relations signals not a permanent fissure but rather a ‘structural reversion’ to their historical baseline. The author advises that South Korea craft a balanced diplomatic strategy attuned to enduring structural dynamics and long-term geopolitical currents. |
