“The Prospect and Future Tasks for the Maritime Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative” Conference

  • 2015-07-24

Hosted by The Sea Lanes of Communication Study Group-Korea, East Asia Institute, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology

Supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The sea has played a critical role in the survival and prosperity of mankind and it has become a more significant area of international cooperation in the era of globalization. Yet, in the case of Northeast Asia, the sea is not a subject of cooperation, but rather a problem that has intensified conflict and distrust within the region as it is closely linked to past history and territorial disputes. The Northeast Peace and Cooperation Initiative (NAPCI), advanced by South Korean government, puts forth the idea of a harmonious regional order in which Northeast Asian countries can achieve co-prosperity based on mutual understanding and cooperation. In order to achieve this goal, maritime issues must be resolved. The East Asia Institute (EAI) jointly held “The Prospect and Tasks of Maritime Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative” Conference with the Sea Lane of Communication (SLOC) Study Group-Korea and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) on July 24, 2015 at Hotel Kukdo. Specialists from related fields including international politics, international law, and science and technology gathered to share their views and seek ways to cooperate for successful implementation of the maritime aspects of the Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative.
