Middle Power Diplomacy Forum “Middle Power Diplomacy: Application, Challenges, and Opportunities”

On October 17 and 18, East Asia Institute (EAI) held the Middle Power Diplomacy Forum (MPDF) under the title of “Middle Power Diplomacy: Application, Challenges, and Opportunities.” This closed forum brought together middle power scholars from South Korea and international experts from Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Singapore, Turkey, the U.S., as well as local embassy representatives. Participants discussed the definition of middle powers within the context of changing U.S.-China relations and other specific issues that are relevant to middle power diplomacy such as: security; maritime disputes; ASEAN and U.S.-China relations; trade; official development assistance; finance; climate change; smart power; cyber security; perspectives on middle power diplomacy from the U.S., China, and Canada. On October 18, participants discussed the role and implications of middle power diplomacy in the context of Korean unification. The Middle Power Diplomacy Forum is a part of EAI’s Middle Power Diplomacy Initiative that has been funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation since 2013.
