Open Forum with Pyeongtaek Citizens

  • 2011-11-10
The East Asia Institute together with Pyeongtaek City held the Open Forum with invited Pyeongtaek citizens on Thursday, November 4, 2011 at Pyeongtaek Southern Culture & Arts Center. Pyeongtaek City has been a symbolic city of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and with the ROK-U.S. alliance. The successful relocation of U.S. military forces and bases is a key issue for the ROK-U.S. alliance and should be accompanied by the continued development of Pyeongtaek City. The East Asia Institute (EAI) has held the “New Pyeongtaek Conference” since 2008, seeking to develop Pyeongtaek into a city of peace and prosperity, where a positive relationship between the United States and South Korea can be established based upon shared values. The New Pyeongtaek Conference, the predecessor of the New Pyeongtaek Knowledge Forum, has been held since 2008, seeking to develop Pyeongtaek into a city of peace and prosperity. The 1st New Pyeongtaek Knowledge Forum entitled “Pyeongtaek Development: toward a leading and competent city” was held on September 1 at International Convention Center of Pyeongtaek University. Panelist explored development strategies for regional competitiveness strength to achieve community consensus. The 2nd New Pyeongtaek Knowledge Forum entitled ‘Integration of U.S. Military and Local Community in a Multicultural Era” was held on October 5 at National Assembly Hall. Panelist discussed what has to be done to establish a desirable relationship between the U.S. military and local residents. At this Open Forum with Pyeongtaek Citizens, panelist of the 1st and 2nd New Pyeongtaek Conferences gathered once again to explore and share developmental strategies with the citizens, focusing on intraregional issues for the development of the City of Pyeongtaek. The forum aimed to provide opportunities for policy makers, officials, and local residents to express, share, and exchange their own positions or thoughts about policies made.
