[EAI·Genron NPO] 2021 Asia Peace Conference

  • 2021-02-24

The East Asia Institute (EAI) held an online conference on February 24, 2021 titled Asia Peace Conference (APC) in partnership with Genron NPO and The Asan Institute for Policy Studies, discussing the topic of achieving peace in Northeast Asia. Foreign affairs and security experts from 4 countries, South Korea, Japan, the United States, and China, participated in a discussion about the ways to address security risks facing Northeast Asia in 2021 and exchanged opinions on whether a peaceful order on the bases of rules and principles can be achieved in the region. The North Korean nuclear problem, together with the Taiwan problem, were suggested as the biggest threats to the regional security. A mutual understanding formed about not only the importance of the role of powerful nations, such as the United States and China, but also about the necessity of cooperation between middle powers, represented by Korea and Japan, in maintaining a stable order in the area.
