"Platform Governance, Platform Democracy" Seminar

As part of the Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) project, the East Asia Institute (EAI) co-hosted a seminar on "Social Media, Disinformation, and Democracy: Platform Governance, Platform Democracy" with the BK21PLUS of Sungkyunkwan University on September 20, 2019. As the first presenter, Professor Kyu Sup Hahn of Seoul National University gave a presentation on "Memories of Twitter: The Age of Social Media, Is Democracy Possible?" Throughout his presentation, Professor Hahn shared the results of his Twitter analysis study which addressed the transition from the previous mass media era to the current social media era. His study evaluated the levels of influence exerted by both on- and off-line news as well as the relationship between followers of media personnel and those of politicians. The second speaker, Professor Sam Youl Lee of Yonsei University presented on "Platform Government: The Search for a Flexible Government with Innovative Mind." In his presentation, Professor Lee examined the crisis related to rapidly changing government policy capabilities and shared his views on how to apply innovative solutions from the private sector towards resolving public problems.
