January 2011  EAI Commentary on a Complex Strategy Toward North Korea Following North Korea's recent provocations, the need for a new strategy toward the North is very evident. This EAI Commentary argues that "the worn out efforts for the Sunshine Policy or sanctions must be put aside and a more effective policy must replace them. In short, a simultaneous approach should be taken: it must prepare for a method to incapacitate North Korea's belligerence while framing a comprehensive peace system to better response against the North's peace offensive."   EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates Issue Briefing on Maritime Issues in East Asia The recent resurgence of disputes in the South China Sea and the East China Sea has brought attention to the difficult maritime issues that inhabit the region. Min Gyo Koo looks into the issues and recommends for a multilateral maritime regime to address the disputes. In this regard, the role of the major powers in the region is critical to finding a solution. The Impact of North Korea's Artillery Strike on Public Opinion North Korea's shelling of Yeonpyeong Island had a major impact on public opinion in South Korea. This Issue Briefing is based on a survey conducted by the EAI shows how South Koreans following the attack strongly favored tougher measures toward the North. However, a key point of the analysis is that the public did not want to abandon engagement policies just yet. This survey also generated considerable interest in the local and international media. Scott Snyder Issue Briefing on Economic Ties and Alliances in East Asia Responding to a previous Working Paper by Dong Sun Lee and Sung Eun Kim, Scott Snyder (Asia Foundation) has written this Issue Briefing. In the original paper, Lee and Kim argued that "economic ties do not markedly reinforce the security alliances of East Asia, because they have an asymmetrical structure." Snyder takes on the opposite argument of the importance of economic ties and alliance relationships. Infravision on Seoul Nuclear Security Summit 2012 In 2012 South Korea will host the Nuclear Security Summit which will address the major global non-proliferation issues. In helping us to understand the preparations that Seoul is making, the EAI invited Hyun Cho (Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) to talk with experts on the issue.
