Asia Security Initiative 2010 Annual Meeting |

The East Asia Institute hosted the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative 2010 Annual Meeting at Westin Chosun Hotel, Seoul, South Korea, from July 7-9 2010. Thirty-five research institutes gathered to discuss two major topics "Post-Crisis Global and Regional Order" and "East Asian Community" as well as broader issues related to the Asia Security Initiative network. For this meeting, the keynote speech was given by Changyong Rhee, Secretary General of the Presidential Committee for the G-20 Summit. Secretary General Rhee gave an overview of the upcoming G-20 Seoul Summit and the issues that will be discussed.

EAI Commentary No. 10 "The Aftermath of the Cheonan Diplomacy at the UN: From a "Post-Cheonan" toward a "Post-Kim Jong-il" Strategy"
This EAI commentary looks into South Korea's "exit strategy" from the Cheonan incident. The policy recommendations in the commentary suggest a two-track strategy, emphasizing both soft and network power in preparation for the post-Kim Jong-il era.
EAI-U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS Workshop on North Korea
March 2010 saw the launch of the 38 North website by the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS, John Hopkins University. Following on from its successful launch, the EAI-U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS Workshop on North Korea was held on July 15-16, 2010. Experts and scholars gathered to discuss internal and external developments in North Korea as well as new ideas for the future development of the 38 North website.
Issue Briefing on the Comfort Women
In this issue briefing, Professor Jun-Hyeok Kwak tackles the controversial issue of the Comfort Women and historical injustice. The paper entitled "The Comfort Women Case Reconsidered: Making Citizens Responsible for Historical Injustices," draws up a number of important implications for addressing the issues of memory wars in Northeast Asia.

The Center for Values and Ethics Roundtable
On July 9, 2010, the EAI's Center for Values and Ethics held a roundtable meeting with Wei Pan, Peking University, who gave a presentation on "Contemporary Chinese System: Its Origin and Future." Details of the roundtable are available on the EAI's website.

EAI Fellows Program Working Paper
A working paper by Susan Whiting is available as part of the EAI Fellows Program. Her paper entitled "What's Law Got to Do With It? Competition among Legal, Political, and Social Norms in the Generation and Resolution of Rural Land Disputes," looks at the complex land issues and disputes in rural parts of China.

2010 EAI Global Academy
The EAI held its second 2010 Global Academy on July 21, 2010 with Susan Whiting presenting the topic of her working paper on land issues in China. Moderated by Professor Lee Yong Wook (Korea University), the event brought together specially-selected students studying in South Korea.

2010 EPIK Young Leaders Conference_Upcoming!
The EAI is inviting undergraduate and graduate students to participate in an essay competition in the 2010 EPIK Young Leaders Conference, which will be held on August 17, 2010. This is an annual academic conference organized by EPIK Spiders, an academic circle created by EAI intern graduates. The essay topic for this year is "Building a Community".
